Lake Lanier Fishing Report

Water temps were at 83 degrees and fish have gone deep.  All fish caught were in 23 plus feet close to either bottom or from the tops of submerged tree tops.  Live bait worked very well on light line and small circle hooks by "Owner".

Don't overlook your brushpiles as fish are near by.  Several big Spotted Bass were caught and released yesterday in the 4 pound range.

Fishing remains very good for both Striped Bass and Spotted Bass.  North or South, it doesn't make a big difference right now.  Trolling Umbrella Rigs works very well.  As in the last few  weeks, the tactics have changed.  Instead of pulling tight to points, these fish have moved deeper.  Most fish caught have come from just above the tree tops in about 25 feet of water.  With this said, Live bait on a down line is incredible right now.

Fishing was very good the first couple of hours on Monday morning and then they disappeared.  Stripers were chasing bait up in the river and anything you could throw, drop or troll, they would eat.  It wasn't till about noon before we could get on them again.  Most fish came from old roadbeds in the river or high spots on humps.

Water temps are still about 71 degrees

Umbrella Rigs are still working Great!  Fish are still on points, roadbeds, and humps.  Check your GPS for these places and don't be afraid to fish shallow and fast.

Its been a very strong week for catching numbers of Stripers.  Every hump, point, Island, brushpile has fish on it.  The magic depth is 15'.  We are pulling rigs through 15' or less of water at 4-5 mph and wearing them out.

Live bait fishing on down lines have also been working extremely well.  Fishing off of humps, right at its crest seems to be the hot ticket.

Fishing Umbrella Rigs.

Fishing this past week has been absolutely incredible.  Humps, points and brush piles are holding tons of fish.

The mornings are started out fishing topwater with Redfins, ChugBugs and Super Spooks on light line.  Then its off to pulling rigs.  We are slamming them.  These Stripers are holding shallow and close to points and tops of humps.

What an incredible Spring !  Its top water time.  The last few days. in between rains have been very good for both Stripers and Bass.

10 pound line class spinning gear and your favorite top water plug, "will" get you bit.  The only big key is, these fish are right up on the bank.  Cast almost to the shore and look for the bite to happen immediately.

It's tough to get a bait past the hungry spots.  These guys are hungry.  Fish up or down the lake right now shallow.  These fish are right on the bank, and are waiting for most anything to swim by.  Its tough to even get a bait out without a nice Spotted Bass eating your bait before its even hooked to a planer board.

MOTHER NATURE !

YES!, weather affects fishing.  It's been an off and on bite in the last couple of weeks.  Massive amounts of rain, (thank God!) has driven the lake to better heights. Fishing at best has been fair.  Most of the lake is stained from its normal clear waters and has fish confused.

Spots are still easy to catch right now.  My favorite lure is a white Rooster Tail in 1 ounce on 6lb spinning gear.

Fishing this past weekend was fair.  Saturday early was a little tough due to higher winds than normal.  Once the winds died a little towards the afternoon, fishing grew stronger.

Same tactics are applied, slow moving flat lined baits in Herring or Shiners are working well.  Points and rip-rap seemed to be my best areas.

Its a very early morning and late evening bite.  Fish are in the backs of major creeks in search of bait.  This magnum spot was caught this morning close to a point, almost up on shore.

Water temps have dropped a few degrees from 54 main, to 51 main lake.

Strongest bite was 1/4 ounce jigs and flat lined live Herring.

Cooler air temps are back, temporarily.

The water has warmed up a good bit into the mid 50's.  This also means the night time Bomber bite should be ON!

Fishing for bass this week has been an absolute BLAST! Any major point, rocks, brush piles, docks, are holding some fatty spots.

This is the time of year to remember the key word, SHALLOW!

OMG ! What a great day on Saturday.  Weather was perfect, and the spots were eating like crazy.

Just for the fun of it, I went live bait fishing for Spots.  I had an incredible high number afternoon filled with good quality fish.

Pulling live bait on flat lines over brush and points was the "hottest ticket".  It was just good !  Every point and every brush pile was a hookup, most times a double and triple.

If your headed out this warm week, FISH SHALLOW !

Its always hit or miss this time of the year mostly due to weather.  Tough fishing after the front when you have those bluebird skies, cold temps and high winds.  When I met the guy in the picture this morning, I believed all the conditions were good.  We found a lot of fish in the backs of most major creeks.  The tell tale sign is the Gulls diving on bait, because of the stripers and bass pushing bait up.  Trolling Umbrella rigs or live bait works very well this time of the year.  Try something different than what others do. Use a much bigger bait or even a real small shiner and you will improve your catch for this time of year.

I hear a lot of the guides catching fish on flat lined bait.  Don't overlook the mid-day down line bait.  I've only had the chance to fish mid day for the last couple of weeks, but I have little success with flat lines on bright days.  I know exactly where the fish are this time of the year, and have much better success with a Flex-it or a down lined trout.

Cold weather doesn't mean cold fishing.  The past couple of weeks have been awesome on Lanier.  Trolling U-Rigs over schools of fish have produced well.  Live trout on a down line in 20-30 feet worked "reel" well today

You guys have got to go fishing right now.  The best I have seen it in years.  Stripers are busting baits on top water all over the south end of the lake.  It's a massive feeding frenzy!!!!

The boy in the picture above is from an organization called "Camp Kudzu".  This foundation supports children with Diabetes illness.  Myself, Capt Jerry Hester, Capt. Mark Smithwick, Lt. Neal Cobb (RPD), Capt. John Mark Thorne, and Allen Silver took 30 kids and spent Saturday afternoon fishing.  What a great time.

Fishing has been on fire this past week.  Most of the fish we have caught have been around the mouth of Big Creek.  Stripers are "Surfacing" and blowing up on bait.  Live bait, trolling, power reeling and of course, top water action has been the meal ticket.

For the last couple of weeks the Umbrella Rig Bite has been strong.  The key is fishing deep with these rigs and locating the bigger bunched up schools.  Their are so many hot areas on the lake, but the south end has been great!

The best way to rig these, is to add an 8 ounce sinker weight to your braided line and run the rigs short at 70 feet.

This past trip was definitely a special one.  A group of Guides were able to take kids from a foundation called "Outdoor Dreams".  This is along the lines of "Make a Wish Foundation"  The 7 year old boy named Tucker from S.C. was an incredible child.  He has many needs and his parents live on pins and needles everyday.  We really had an awesome time and he was able to reel in some nice fish.

It's still a very strong "trolling" bite.  All areas on the south end of the lake are HOT!

Reactionary bite.

This past week has definitely proven that it is a reactionary bite for Stripers.  Live bait has been a tough bite unless you lengthen up your leaders and go to an 8-10 pound Fluorocarbon Leader and a small hook.

The Umbrella Trolling bite is very strong.  Use a loaded up 4 arm with 1 ounce jigs and trailers all around.  Then add a 6 ounce in-line egg sinker on your line to get it down deep.

Umbrella Rigs.

The past few fishing trips have been a little different.  I have easily found fish in abundance, but hardly an get them to eat a live bait.  These fish have been from 28 feet of water and greater.  As I'm looking at the graph, the most I see are schools of

4-5 fish, but very often.  The south side of the lake in pockets are full of fish.

They obviously are on that reactionary strike and are banging Umbrella rigs like its their last meal.

Strange Stripers.

Fishing is great!  You just have to figure out the Striper Formula.  Okay here Goes!  We found fish stacked in a Bay on the south side of the lake.  Dropped good lively bait and they would not touch it.  So we trolled Umbrella Rigs and wore them out.  Then they stopped eating that and started eating single jigs on Lead Core.  They quit that and started eating Live Bait.  Phew! Then like a light switch, shut off from that.  The fish moved from over a 100' bottom to a 60' bottom and we started catching them again.  Except we had to fish right on the bottom.  Instead of your rod doubling over, it went flat.  They were picking the bait up off the bottom and swimming up!  Go Figure !!!  Strange fish.

Summer deep fishing on Lanier!

It's been very good this week.  Fish are scattered all over the lake in deep water.  Most of the fish have "not" come from any one exact area.  Good places are the mouth to Bald Ridge, 2, 4, 6, mile creek and Shady Grove.  Don't worry about the O'dark thirty trip, most of the bite has been after lunch.

Fishing is strong across the lake.  Watch your graph over deep water for those big schools.  Start on the main lake and work your way back in the major creeks and be sure to look behind 3 sister islands.

Lake Lanier Fishing Report.

It's summer time and that means these fish have gone deep.  The 40 foot mark and greater is where all of the fish have come from in the last week.  If I had to give a secret key is that get them schooled up and "power reel".  More fish come from that technique for this time of the year than any.  Look first on your graph and see at least 3-5 fish schooled , then take it away from them.  They can't stand it.

Summer Fishing at Lake Lanier.

Fishing has been very good this past week at Lanier.  Good reports of fish are being caught from one end of the lake to the next.  Live bait on down lines and also trolling leadcore line and Umbrella rigs have worked very well.  Their is a mixture of spotted bass and stripers on points and humps with water over more than 25 feet.

I Love June Fishing!

This past week has been very good for catching numbers of Striped Bass and Spotted Bass.

I have started the day fishing in open Bays near River Forks.  Down lining Herring in 25 feet of water over timber has been the hot ticket all week.  You can watch your graph light up when the fish come out to check your baits.  Within seconds the bite is on.

After the sun comes up, we hit some deeper brush, 25-30 feet of water and catch a mix of Spots, Stripers and Catfish.  It's great, we are burning on the average 1/2 day 150 baits.

All Brush Piles today.

Today I had 4 beginner fisherman who needed a good first impressionable memory.  So we fished brush on the upper end of the lake.  As it turned out, we wore the spots out and even caught several stripers.  The one in the picture above was the day's best.  Sorry about the blurry picture, I used my camera phone.

Best fishing EVER!

This past week has been the best I have seen ever on Lanier.  The down line bite has been absolutely incredible.  We had the best numbers day on Lanier at 45 Stripers in the boat.  Fishing over a 70-80 foot bottom with tree tops at 25 feet was the hot ticket.

Brushpile Fishing.

Fishing on Lanier has been absolutely incredible these past couple of weeks.  Down lined Herring over open water in the backs of major creeks has worked very well.  After the sun gets up we have switched to fishing major brush on points and humps to clean up the day.
